Fallback Email Setup

The Fallback Connection feature in Post SMTP helps improve email delivery reliability by automatically using a backup mailer whenever your primary connection fails. If your primary SMTP connection is temporarily unavailable, fails authentication, or encounters sending issues, Post SMTP will automatically switch to the configured fallback connection to ensure emails continue sending successfully.

Before configuring a fallback connection, make sure you have already configured multiple mailer connections using the Additional Connections feature in Post SMTP.

Note: The fallback mailer can only be selected from previously configured mailer connections.

Accessing fallback settings

To access the Fallback Connection settings:

• Log in to your WordPress dashboard
• Navigate to Post SMTP → Settings → Fallback

Inside this section, you’ll see the available fallback configuration options.

How to configure the fallback connection

Follow the steps below to configure a backup mailer connection.

Enable the Fallback Feature

Inside the Fallback settings page:

• Locate the Fallback Connection option
• Enable the feature by selecting Yes

Once enabled, additional fallback configuration settings will appear.

Select a Fallback Mailer

After enabling the feature:

• Open the fallback connection dropdown menu
• Select one of your previously configured mailer connections
• Click Save Changes

• Your fallback connection will now be active

This selected mailer will act as the backup SSMTP server whenever the primary connection fails.

Post SMTP will automatically use this connection whenever the primary mailer encounters an issue.

It is important to always use a different mailer for the fallback connection instead of selecting the same primary mailer. Using separate SMTP providers improves email delivery reliability during outages or connection failures.

Testing Your Fallback Connection

• After configuring your fallback mailer, it’s recommended to verify that both your primary and backup connections are working properly.
• You can test your configuration by sending a test email during the final step of the Setup Wizard setup process.
• You can also review the Email Logs to confirm whether emails are being delivered successfully through the fallback connection.

Migration Flow for Existing Users

When existing users update Post SMTP from an older version to Post SMTP Core v4.0.0, a WordPress admin notice will appear prompting them to migrate their existing SMTP mailer configuration to the new Additional Connections system.

Once the user clicks the Update Settings to Fallback button, their existing mailer configuration will automatically be migrated and structured as the Primary Mailer inside the new Additional Connections settings flow.

This migration process helps existing users seamlessly transition to the new connection management system without losing their previous SMTP configuration settings.

Users can also restore their settings to the previous configuration at any time if they prefer to continue using the legacy setup instead of the new Fallback and Additional Connections system.
