First things first, ensure you have the Post SMTP plugin’s latest version installed on your WordPress site. If you don’t have it installed, follow the Installation & Activation guide.

Configuration Process

Head over to your WordPress admin site.

  • Go to the Post SMTP Dashboard and click on Setup the Wizard.
  • Select the Gmail API from the SMTP Mailer and click the Continue button.
  • In the Mailer Settings, enter From Email (should be the same email address used to log in to Gmail account) & From Name.

Note : Turn on “Prevent plugins and themes from changing this” to stop other plugins or themes from overriding this field.

Gmail API setup

Log in to your Google account and open Google Cloud Console in a new tab. Before setting up the Gmail API, you must choose a Project.

Activating One-Click Setup

Creating a new Project

  • To create a new Project, click on Select a Project on the top left of the dashboard.
  • Click on New Project.
  • Enter Project Name & Click on the Create button.
  • A notification pop-up will appear stating, “Project is created.” Select the Project.

Select an already existing Project

  •  If you already have a Project, click on it.

Enable Gmail API

  • On the top left corner, click on the Navigation Menu> APIs & Services> Library.

Use the search bar to find Gmail API.

Click Enable to activate Gmail API.

Go to the OAuth consent screen.

Click on Get Started.

Fill in all the App name & User support email and click on Next.

Select the Audience type as External & click Next.

Enter Contact Information & click Next.

Ensure that you put in your Gmail address in these fields to avoid any errors in the future.

Review & Accept Google API Services: User Data Policy & click Continue.

Click on the Create button

You have successfully created a Gmail API application. Now you will be able to see the following screen, click on Create OAuth Client.

Note: Adding Scopes, email addresses other than yours in the Developer contact information will lead to Verification which might take some time to publish your Gmail API.

Creating Your Application’s Credentials

  • Select Web application from the Application type field’s dropdown & enter a name.
  • Enter Authorized JavaScript origins & Authorized redirect URI by copying them from the Wizard screen from Post SMTP & pasting them in Gmail API > Clients>  Create OAuth client ID page.
  • Click on the Create button to proceed.
  • A pop-up window appears, displaying the Client ID and Client Secret.
  • Copy & paste Client ID & Client Secret in Post SMTP Wizard.
  • Click on the “Connect to Gmail API” button and grant access.
  • Once Authorization is successful, click on the Save & Continue button.
  • Enter the recipient’s Email Address and click on Send Test Email.
  • Your email is successfully delivered. Click on the Finish button to end the wizard.

You have successfully configured Post SMTP with Gmail API. You can view the details of the sent email by navigating to the Email Log.
