Setting Up Your Mailtrap Account

To begin, you’ll need a Mailtrap account. If you already have one, log in to your Mailtrap dashboard. Otherwise, create a free account using your email address or sign up with Google, GitHub, or Office 365, and complete the onboarding process.

Step 1: Add and Verify Your Sending Domain

Before you can send emails through Mailtrap, you must add and verify your sending domain.

  • ● In the Mailtrap dashboard, navigate to the Sending Domains tab in the left navigation panel and click on Add Domain.

  • Copy/paste the DNS records provided by Mailtrap into your domain provider’s settings.

  • Mailtrap will check the DNS records automatically every hour, but you can force a check by clicking the Re-check DNS Records button.

Once all required DNS records are added correctly, their status will change from Missing to Verified, and the red indicators will turn green.

Important:

After adding DNS records, you’ll be asked to complete a short form with business or personal details. Completing this form is mandatory to comply with international email regulations and to enable sending.

Step 2: Create an API Key

  • Go to Settings, select API Tokens, and click on the Add Token button.

Note: Make sure to keep your Mailtrap API token stored and secured safely.

Step 3: Connect Mailtrap with Post SMTP

All you need to do now is use the generated Mailtrap API key to connect with Post SMTP in a few easy steps:

Open Post SMTP from your WordPress dashboard and start the setup wizard. ● Select ‘Mailtrap’ as your mailer in the Post SMTP setup wizard and click Continue.

Configure Mailer Settings

On the Mailer Settings screen, enter the following details:

  • From Email: Use an email address that belongs to the domain you verified in Mailtrap.
  • From Name: Enter the sender name that recipients will see in their inbox.
  • Mailtrap API Key: Paste the API key you created in Step 2.

Click Save and Continue to proceed.

Note: If other plugins or themes are overriding the sender details, enable the option “Prevent plugins and themes from changing this” under the From Email and From Name fields to keep the settings consistent.

Sending a Test Email

To confirm everything is working correctly:

  1. Enter a Recipient Email Address.
  2. Click Send Test Email.

If the email is delivered successfully, you’ll see a confirmation message.

Click Finish to complete the setup and exit the wizard.

Once you get the message saying that your email was successfully delivered, you can click on the Finish button and exit the wizard.
